CANCO runs an initiative on Marine Protection which targets Sustainable Development Goal 14 (conserve and sustainably use the oceans dear and marine resources for sustainable development) focusing on target 14.5 and how to develop and improve protection and conservation of the ocean/marine areas to meet the obligation "by 2020 conserve at least 10 percent of coastal and marine areas consistent with national and international law based on the best available information.

The initiative further focuses on coastal fisher communities on how they can contribute to and benefit from conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources as well as enhance socio -ecological resilience and sustainable future.
