Community Action for Nature Conservation in collaboration with the County Government of Taita Taveta will commemorate the World Fisheries Day Celebrations 2023 in the Riparian of Lake Chala, Taita Taveta County. The WFD celebrations will provide a public platform to create awareness of the importance of maintaining sustainable fishery, promoting ecological balance, and preserving the health and integrity of aquatic ecosystems such as inland lakes, rivers, and wetlands. More importantly, the celebrations provide an opportunity for the often overlooked and neglected Lake Jipe and Chala small-scale fishing communities and bring to the public attention and authorities the pressing challenges and issues they face across fisheries governance, resource management, value chain, post-harvest, and trade as well as capacity development within the realms of responsible fisheries and sustainable development. The WFD celebrations will also provide an opportunity to explore solutions to the challenges and provide a forum to inform the fishing communities of government (national and county) policies, programs, and other robust opportunities that small-scale fisher communities can take advantage of and improve the sector.
