Who Are We

Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO) is a Kenyan Non-Governmental Organization registered in 2008, with formal operations beginning in 2010.

We are committed to advancing good environmental governance, sustainable natural resource management, and responsible socio-economic development for the public good. Our work is guided by universal values of good governance, democratic rights, and fundamental freedoms ensuring that conservation efforts deliver widespread benefits to communities while safeguarding ecosystem integrity.

Our Foundation

CANCO was founded by a multidisciplinary team of professionals and practitioners driven by a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. We believe that strong institutions, informed communities, and inclusive governance systems are key to achieving long-term conservation impact.

Our Focus

We recognize the transformative potential of civil society—particularly Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) as powerful agents of change in environmental conservation, restoration, and responsible development. However, many CBOs face challenges that limit their effectiveness, including:

These gaps often prevent CBOs from translating their commitment into organized, influential movements capable of driving meaningful environmental and policy change.

Our Response

We build and strengthen the capacity, governance, and influence of CBOs and other civil society actors. We work to:

Our Approach

We understand that behavior change is central to conservation success. Environmental outcomes are shaped by the decisions and practices of communities, civil society, government (national and county), private sector actors, and development partners.

Community resource use is influenced by multiple factors—including policies and laws, gender dynamics, social norms, economic conditions, access to resources, and knowledge levels. CANCO works to address these drivers by promoting informed decision-making, inclusive governance, and responsible resource stewardship.

Partnerships & Networks

CANCO places strong emphasis on building and maintaining collaborative relationships with:
