Engagement with Beach Management Unit Leadership on JCMA Implementation

CANCO engaged members of the Beach Management Unit (BMU) Executive Committee at Shela fish landing site in Malindi to discuss the implementation of the Malindi – Magarini Joint Co-Management Area (JCMA) Plan.

The meeting provided a valuable platform to reflect on progress, identify operational challenges, and assess priority areas requiring institutional support. Discussions generated important insights on existing capacity gaps, particularly in governance, compliance, resource mobilization, and participatory fisheries management.

Key thematic areas identified for strengthening include:

  • Institutional governance and leadership within BMUs

  • Monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) systems

  • Financial management and sustainability of BMU operations

  • Community engagement and co-management effectiveness

  • Data collection and reporting mechanisms

The dialogue reaffirmed the central role of BMUs in advancing sustainable fisheries governance within the JCMA framework. Strengthening institutional capacity at the local level remains critical to ensuring effective co-management, improved compliance, and long-term sustainability of marine and coastal resources in Malindi.

CANCO remains committed to supporting BMUs through structured capacity-building interventions and collaborative implementation of the JCMA Plan.
