Advancing JCMA Implementation at Shela BMU, Malindi
At the Shela BMU fish landing site in Malindi, we engaged members of the Beach Management Unit (BMU) executive committee in a focused discussion on the implementation of the Malindi–Magarini Joint Co-Management Area (JCMA) Plan.
The session provided a valuable platform to reflect on progress, challenges, and opportunities in operationalizing the JCMA framework at the community level. Through open dialogue, participants shared practical insights on existing capacity gaps, highlighting key areas that require targeted institutional strengthening and capacity building.
Key themes emerging from the discussion included the need to enhance governance structures, improve coordination among BMUs within the JCMA, and strengthen technical knowledge on sustainable fisheries management practices.
These engagements are critical in ensuring that BMUs are well-equipped to effectively implement co-management plans, ultimately contributing to improved fisheries governance and sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities.
