Strengthening the Mombasa BMU Network through Organizational Capacity Assessment

CANCO, together with representatives of the Mombasa BMU Network executive committee, reviewed and validated findings from a recently conducted Organizational Capacity Assessment (OCA). The session aimed to build consensus on the results and gather additional input ahead of finalizing the report.

The OCA is a participatory self-assessment process used to evaluate an organization’s ability to effectively deliver on its mandate. It identifies capacity gaps across key areas such as governance, leadership, membership, program delivery, sustainable fisheries management, financial systems, advocacy, and organizational sustainability, and informs the development of an Institutional Improvement Plan.

As part of broader Organizational Development (OD), the process supports strengthening internal systems, improving performance, and addressing structural and operational challenges. CANCO views the OCA and the resulting improvement plan as important first steps toward enhancing the capacity, coordination, and long-term sustainability of the Mombasa County BMU Network.
