Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a grant from the TBT Coalition to launch a vital new initiative titled “Trawling the Line: A Kenyan Coastal Community Call for Sustainable Seas”. This project focuses on the nearshore waters of Kilifi, Tana River, specifically targeting the North Kenya Banks and the Malindi-Ungwana Bay area. This project implements a comprehensive strategy that prioritises both community action and policy reform. The first phase focuses on empowering local coastal communities through training sessions on documenting illegal fishing activities. Alongside these grassroots efforts, CANCO will conduct an evidence-based audit of current fisheries management instruments. The resulting data will be packaged into a policy brief designed to engage national and county-level policymakers in meaningful dialogue. By highlighting the critical need for stricter compliance, the initiative aims to secure the fishing grounds of small-scale fishers and protect the environmental rights of those whose livelihoods depend on a healthy ocean
