On 8 June 2026, Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO) joined the fishing community of Jimbo Village Fish Landing Site in Vanga Location, Lungalunga Sub-County, Kwale County, to celebrate World Ocean Day under the theme:

“Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet.”

The celebration brought together small-scale fishers, Beach Management Units (BMUs), women and youth groups, community leaders, government representatives, and partners to recognize the critical role that healthy oceans and well-managed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) play in sustaining marine biodiversity, supporting coastal livelihoods, and building resilience to climate change.

The day served as an opportunity to:
🌊 Raise awareness on the importance of conserving marine ecosystems and strengthening Marine Protected Areas.
🐟 Promote sustainable fisheries and responsible use of marine resources.
🤝 Highlight the vital role of coastal communities in ocean governance and marine conservation.
🌱 Inspire collective action to protect our ocean for present and future generations.

At CANCO, we believe that strong and inclusive Marine Protected Areas are most effective when they are supported by informed, empowered, and actively engaged coastal communities. Community stewardship remains central to safeguarding marine ecosystems while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for those who depend on them.

As we marked World Ocean Day on 8 June, we reaffirmed our commitment to working alongside communities, government, and partners to advance community-led ocean governance, strengthen marine conservation efforts, and contribute to a thriving and sustainable blue economy.

🌍 Our ocean connects us all. By strengthening Marine Protected Areas today, we secure a healthier, more resilient blue planet for generations to come.
