On 28th and 29th July, Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO) facilitated a two-day session for the Malindi–Magharini Joint Beach Management Unit Committee (JBC) in Malindi.
The session was designed to strengthen the Joint BMU Committee’s understanding of its coordination mandate under the Malindi–Magharini Joint Co-Management Area (JCMA). As the coordinating body for the member Beach Management Units (BMUs), the JBC plays a critical role in providing strategic leadership, fostering collaboration among BMUs, and supporting the effective implementation of the JCMA Management Plan.
The session brought together members of the Joint BMU Committee, officers from the Kilifi County Directorate of Fisheries, the Director of Fisheries, Kilifi County, and officers from the Kenya Fisheries Service (KeFS). The engagement provided an opportunity for participants to strengthen collaboration between community institutions and government agencies responsible for fisheries governance and management.
Through interactive discussions, participants reflected on the JBC’s mandate, roles and responsibilities, coordination mechanisms, and approaches for strengthening collective action in managing shared fisheries resources. The session also reinforced the importance of effective communication, accountability, and partnerships in implementing the JCMA Management Plan.
Speaking during the session, participants reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively to strengthen co-management structures and promote sustainable fisheries management for the benefit of coastal communities and future generations.
